The particular logo of three red-colored diamonds, shared with over forty others within the keiretsu, predates Mitsubishi Motors itself by almost a century. It was chosen by Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, as it was suggestive from the emblem of the Tosa Clan who first employed him or her, and because his individual family crest was about three rhombuses stacked atop each other. The name Mitsubishi can be a compound of mitsu ("three") and hishi (literally, "water chestnut", often used in Western to denote a precious stone or rhombus).
